What Is My AI Business Maturity Level?

A 5-minute, plain-English self-check across 6 dimensions to gauge where your business really stands on AI adoption.

Most business leaders have a gut feeling about where their company stands with AI — but not a real answer. Is your team ahead of the curve, or just talking about ChatGPT in meetings?

This isn't a full audit. It's a 5-minute, plain-English self-check based on our AI Business Maturity Model (AIBMM), the framework we use with clients to measure AI readiness. Grab a coffee, answer honestly, and you'll walk away with a rough sense of where you stand.

The 6 Dimensions of AI Maturity

Strategy — Does AI actually connect to your business goals, or is it a side project nobody owns?

Data — Can your team actually find, trust, and use your data, or is it scattered and messy?

Technology — Do you have platforms and tools that can support AI work, or are you duct-taping things together?

Talent — Does anyone on your team actually know how to use AI well, or would you need to hire or train?

Culture — Are people encouraged to experiment with AI, or is it quietly discouraged or ignored?

Governance — Do you have any guardrails around AI use — data privacy, accuracy checks, acceptable use — or is it the Wild West?

Score Yourself: 1 Question Per Dimension

For each one, rate yourself honestly from 1 (not at all) to 5 (fully, and everyone knows it).

| Dimension | Self-Check Question | Your Score (1-5) | |---|---|---| | Strategy | Does leadership have a written point of view on how AI fits your 3-year plan? | ___ | | Data | Could someone on your team pull clean, reliable data for an AI tool today without a scramble? | ___ | | Technology | Do your current systems (CRM, docs, files) actually support AI tools plugging into them? | ___ | | Talent | Does at least one person on your team confidently use AI tools in their actual daily work? | ___ | | Culture | Do employees feel safe experimenting with AI without fear of "doing it wrong"? | ___ | | Governance | Do you have any written policy on acceptable AI use, data privacy, or fact-checking AI output? | ___ |

Add up your six scores and divide by 6 for a rough average.

What Your Rough Average Means

This is an informal gut-check, not a scientific score — but it gives you a starting point.

Level 1 — Unaware/Exploring (avg. ~1-1.5): AI is a buzzword in your building, not a practice. Nobody owns it, and there's no plan yet.

Level 2 — Experimenting (avg. ~2): A few people are poking around with AI tools on their own, but it's unofficial, unstructured, and not connected to strategy.

Level 3 — Operationalizing (avg. ~3): AI is being used for real, recurring tasks in at least one part of the business, with some light oversight in place.

Level 4 — Scaling (avg. ~4): Multiple teams use AI as part of normal workflow, data and tools are reasonably solid, and there's real governance behind it.

Level 5 — Optimizing/Leading (avg. ~4.5-5): AI is woven into strategy, culture, and operations, with clear ownership, clean data, and policies that get revisited as things evolve.

Most companies land somewhere between Level 1 and Level 3 — and that's completely normal. The point of this exercise isn't to feel behind. It's to see, at a glance, which of the six dimensions needs attention first.

Want a Real Answer, Not Just a Gut-Check?

A 5-minute self-score is a good conversation starter, but it can't capture the nuance a real assessment does — stakeholder interviews, an honest look at your data and systems, and a prioritized plan for what to fix first.

If you want that level of clarity, the next step is our AI Business Maturity Assessment, where we walk through all six dimensions with your team and hand you a concrete action plan.

Prefer to learn at your own pace first? Our AIBMM Monthly Training sessions cover these dimensions in more depth, with real examples from businesses working through the same questions.

Either way, the first step is the same one you just took: an honest look at where you actually stand.
